Munds Wagon Trail
Once the main highway between Sedona and Flagstaff, Munds hasn't been passable to wagons for many decades.
Today it's a gradual uphill climb for hikers and mountain bikers, frequently passing close to a creek bed with interesting plantlife,
and taking you to two major rock formations: Cow Pies (a popular vortex spot) and The Carousel.
Trailhead: |
From the 89A / 179 "Y" ... take 179 south 0.3 miles; turn left on Schnebly Hill Road for 0.9 miles; parking lot is on your left. |
Length: |
8 miles (out and back) Elevation change: 1200 ft |
Notes: |
Gets a little warm (and Jeep infested) during summer months (but if you go early in the day it's nice to walk up on the dirt road and back on the trail). |
The Hike
Sacred datura, and a stone embankment left from the old wagon road
On Cow Pies: view of huge caves high above, and weird stuff left by new-agers
Cactus blossom
Looking down on swirly, vortex-y Cow Pies from further up the trail
The Carousel, and two carousel "animals" (a donkey and an elephant...??)
